What was the reason Circe sent Odysseus to Hades?

Sometimes, events or pieces of a story can have symbolic meaning: Polyphemus, for example. Sometimes, a part of a story could simply be informative or, a character undergoes some event which informs that character, i.e. Odysseus finds out Agamemnon has died and in return, that event informs us the reader.

Thinking about everything that Odysseus did while in Hades, tell why you think he was sent there by Circes? Do you think it symbolized something or was he there to get information?

There are no right or wrong answers for this only reasonable ones. If you give some thought to what you write, you will have succeeded with the assignment.

Be care of grammar and spelling. Don't forget to put your classroom number at the end of your post.

I think the gods want him to suffer and see that when he dies he will suffer like this forever and that almost all the people he respects and thinks of as great warriors are down here such as Agamemnon and Achilles. The only good part is that he gets some information about his journey.

  3. I think that she wanted him to talk to those people so he knows what not to do and so he has faith in himself to finish his journey home. #28

    1. I think that Sirce wanted him to Achilles, Agamemnon, his mom and other people so that he knows what has happen at home while he was in war and also some advice when he is on his journey home. #28

  4. I think that Circes told him to go there to get some information. Odysseus also helped some people like Achilles by telling him that his son was still alive.

  6. The gods wanted him to go to hades to make Odysseus realize that when he goes down to Hades and dies that he will just be a ghost, no respect or honor. also the gods knew that he would get some good and bad information about his journey home and about his family.

    1. (im addng on) The gods wanted him to Hades to make Odysseus realize that when he goes down to Hades and dies that he will just be a ghost, no respect or honor, just like the great Achilles. He is miserable and gets not respect because we are all equal when we are dead. also the gods knew that he would get some good and bad information about his journey home. like how his men couldn't touch a god's sheep or else they will all die. He also got information about how his mother died, and that his father is still alive waiting for him. Odysseus learned that his son his a great warrior that he would be proud of.

  7. I think that the Circes wanted Odysseus to go to hades because they wanted to let Odysseus to get more wisdom and how he has to get home to his wife to become the king again and to find out that his way home is going to be a long and harsh way home. He also found out that he needs to stay away from Threnashia or him and his men are going to die.

  8. I think that Circe sent him down to Hades to follow an order from Zeus, so she can benefit herself, cause she probably doesn't know about his wife, ormit was Zeus's plan to try to kill Odyseuss. Zeus might want to make Odyseuss chiken out, from grief and sadness. My final thought is that msybe Circe wants to help Odyseuss in his journey home, and that the sprits of the dead will tell what to do, and what not to do.

  9. When he saw his mom he knew that she had died so he was wondering what about his other family like his wife and his son. He was also probably wondering why was Agamemnon there? Did he make it home safely?
So I think that she sent him there to find out more about what happened after the war. #2

  10. I think that Circe wanted Odysseus to go down to Hades so he can get information to help him on his journey of going back to Ithaca. Also, Circe might have known that Odysseus didn't know what happened to the other Greeks and Circe might have known that Achilles and Agamemnon died and when he went to Hades he would possibly see them and hear there stories and get advice from them.

  11. I think Circes sent Odysseus to Hades to see all of the ghosts of the people he saw in Troy and how they will stay there forever and suffer and if he dies he will too. Then he will be ready for the dangerous journey back home.

  12. I think the reason Circes sent him is to warn him about the straits Charbdis, Scylla and the Wanderers. He got know that Achilles, Agamemnon and his mom have died. He gave information to Agamemnon, Achilles, and his mom he also gained information about his family and what's going on. #23

  13. Why did Circe send Odysseus down to hades?
What I think is that Circe sent him down so he can get some more information about his trip. So he can be tougher and have more knowledge about his family/friends. - #11

  14. My thoughts are that Circe doesn't want Odysseus to leave, so Circe makes him talk to Agamemnon to trick Odysseus into not going home. Or that she wanted to give Odysseus information.

    1. What information? This lacks detail which is a bit of a shame because the idea that Circe wants Odysseus to talk with Agamemnon to hear the consequences of his return is a good one. If Odysseus is now afraid to go home, he might return to Circe. Elaborate on your ideas in writing and you will have earned a large audience that appreciates your insight.

  15. I think Circe wanted Odysseus to go down to hades to know some information about how to get home and to know what happened to the other Greeks that tried to sail home from Troy.

I think she wanted to show him how life would or could be when he got home. His mother is dead and his father might die when he gets home, his wife may not want him anymore. I think she's showing him that it might be better to stay with her than to go home. Also she may have done it to show the kind of suffering that will happen if he dies.

  17. I think Odysseus was sent to Hades so he could get some information on how to get home and what happened to his friends. But mostly so he could talk to spirits and get advice like to avoid Threnashia and to see his mother so she could warn him that there would be unwanted guests at his house. #3

  18. I think Cierce sent Odysseus down to Hades because needed to know what happened to everybody when he and other men were in the wooden horse. I also think that he was sent to Hades incase that Agamemnon, Odysseus's mom, and Achilles had anything to tell Odysseus.#22

  19. i think probably why circe told Odessyeus to go down was some about what he would expect when he went home because most of the greek leaders either didn't make it home or killed once they got there. 2 to seek info of what he had to do to get home or have emotional info about what was happening at Greece to his family. 3 circe might have also understood that the people in hell would need info emotionally like Achilles he wanted to know if his son was ok and Odessyeus's mother wanted to know if he was still sailing to Ithica or he was there now. #26

  20. I think Circe sent him there to get knowledge, such as: Agamemnon's death, his moms death, and Achilles death. And Circe tells him about Scylla, Charbidis, and Wanderers for his journey.

  21. I think Circes sent Odysseus to hades so he could get knowledge and spread it. I think he gained knowledge by talking to Tiresias about the wanders, Scylla, Charybdis, to learn about his family, and to see what might happen to him when he goes to hades because of what he did to Polyphemus. -1

I think the reason why Circes sent Odysseus to hades was because he wanted Odysseus to know what was going on while he was gone and what happened and tell the people who died if their families were doing fine and not to let them worry. or to get more information on why each one of them were down their.
