Britain on the Offensive, Washington strikes back

In the first years of the Revolution, the British army focused on creating New York as a stronghold especially because there were so many Loyalists there. Britain had a great deal of success against the American army eventually pushing all American soldiers out of the colony and ultimately into Pennsylvania.
Given how the initial battles went for the Americans, why was it important for Washington to risk a night crossing of the Delaware River? Who did Washington seek to surprise? Was his plan successful? What did the crossing symbolize for all Americans?

  1. #29-Because he was retreating away from New York and the Red Coats are closing on the Rebels. General Washington was trying to suprise Howe's army but they found out so they were charging at them but, he was on the Delaware river, so Howe went back to New York. George Washington's part of the plan had not worked but, when he was retreating from Howe's army, but the river was overwhelming his army so he retreated back to New York. It was a small victory for George Washington's Army. The Crossing showed that they can still damage the enemy.

Washington's ride was important because if he hadn't riden across the river, the British might have bombed the Americans. Washington sought to suprise Howe and his army. His plan did work because in the end he and his army defeated the British. The crossing symbolized bravery of the Americans.

Yes I think that the ride across the Delaware river was important in the revolution for the Americans. General Washington surprised the the Hessian and and the Howe brothers by attacking the house that Cornell Ralph was living in. Washington won the war.The cross symbolized bravery for the Americans.

I think the ride across Delawarewas important for the Americans in the war. The Hessians were the ones who they surprised when they didn't read the note the spy had given them until it was too late. It was succesful for Washington because he and the Americans won the war. The ride across Delaware simbalized that they wouldn't give up. This is what I think about the ride across Delaware.

The ride was important in the war for many reasons. It gave the element of surprize, something valuable in this time. It was a difficult endeavour as well as being a place of symbolism of bravery for americans. It had a place of great value.

It was important for Washington to cross the Delaware River because it prooved thst during a time when men were abondoning the army, they crossed the Delaware River and won the battle. When General Washington crossed the river, he seeked to suprise the Hesians. His plan was succesful. Washington managed to capture nine hundred soldiers and mordally wounded Raoul(leader of the Hesians). The crossing sybolyzed that with few men in the army, it was still possible to win and be victorious.

It was important to cross the Delaware river at night so they could be in the secrecy of darkness. Washington wanted to surprise Rall and the Hessians on Chrismas Day. Within 1 hour the Hessians had surrendered. Rall was mortally wounded and died the next day. The Trenton victory showed that the Americans still had the abillity to cause alot of damage. It also showed the Americans courage and bravery.

I was so important because they had to get to the Heshian.Washington seeked Raul to surprise. Washington's plan was to make a person go to the Heshians and send a note to Raul. If Raul read the note when they gave it to him, Washington's plan would not go right but Raul was too busy playing his game and yes the plan did work. The cross symbolised that it was there land.

  15. #27....... I think that Washington's trip across the Delaware was important because he wanted to suprise the German Hessians. When Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware river and marched on to Trenton they were confident. Washington destroyed many boats all around. The Hessians were very much hated by the Americans, and when they saw them they killed many. So yes, General Washington's plan had worked, and they were successful. The crossing symbolized that the Americans still had the ability to cause real damage on their enemies. Washington had a victory. Still, a lot of damage came to his army. So I would have to come to the conclusion that the whole American crisis and the battle of Trenton was neutral. It was good in some ways, and bad in others. I am just glad Washington and his troops won.

It was important because they were covered or hidden by the darkness of the night. Washington was to surprise the Hessians. His plan was successful because instead of reading the note telling Raul and the Hessians that they were going to attack, they kept on playing their game. The victory symbolized that the Americans still had the abilty to to cause real damage on their enemies.

I think it was important for Washington to cross the delaware river because he wanted to do a sneak attak on the Hesssians with his American troops. George Washington was to suprise the German Hessians. I think his plan succesfully worked, he captured nine-hundred hessians and Rall was mortally wounded and died the next day. The cross symbolized the victory for the Americans and how the had the ability to cause very much damage on thier enemies and even though surrounded these troops, they still won the Battle of Trenton.

  19. #1:) It was important for General Washington to take a risk crossing the river because, if he wouldn't have, the British probably would have destroyed the Americans. Washington hoped to surprise Howe's army, but Howe's army already found out what they wanted to do, so they planned to stop the loyalists persacution. Unfortunatly, George's first part plan did not work. The crossing symbolized to all Americans that they had the ability to do real damage to their enemies.

The impact of the river crossing that George Wshington planned was basicaly the outcome of the war. He knew that if he didn't do something to surrender the british that they would of lost. Washington was going to suprise one of the British forts. As he was riding toward the fort where the heshions were celebrating Christmas a British spy came to the fort to deliver a message to the heshions that the americans were planing to attack that very night. When the heshions got the note they decided to put it off for a while and ended up never even reading it!Because of that tiny which turned out to be a huge mistake led by the british the americans eventually surendered the fort. I think that the crossing definatly shows that when we get hit we hit back harder and shows that we don't mess around when we truly have buisness on our hands!

  21. #11- It was very important for General Washington to cross the Deleware river because if he didn't decide to do that, the Americans would've got ambushed by the Hessians anyway. Eventually, the Hessians would've got there. Instead, Washington seeked to surprise the Hessians by sneaking into their camp after crossing the river. A Hessians When they did this the Hessians were startled by the American soldiers that they literally got trampled on by the Americans. The Hessians were so scared they surrendered. George Washington's plan was very successful. This symbolized the American citizen's independence.

I think the river crossing was very important because the rebels needed a victory at that time. Not only that, but that became a sign saying "we can win". General Washington sought to surprise the hessian forces on the other side of the river led by Johan Rall. This is the first surprise attack from the rebels in the war. The hessian commander Rall was mortally wounded during the attack and the rebels took an estimate 900 prisoners during the assault.

With the letter for a waring he gave to the genrel the genrel did not read it so Washington's plan was successful. i do not know the answer for the last question. i hope I did good! :)

Washingtons planed to surpries Howe's army but Howe was not their at the time. General Washington did the crossing of the Delaware on Chrismas eve. The general had a spy that find out the American's were going to try and finish this war by attacking. But he did not read the note that the spy gave him. His plan did not work as planed and got kicked out of every place they went to but at the end of all this the Americans won the war.

It was important for George’s army to cross the Delaware River because if that didn’t the war would have been over for the Americans especially if Howe would have read the letter the spy gave him. He was seeking to surprise Howe. His plan was successful because they did not expect it. Crossing the bridge symbolized being free and bravery.

Washington went accross the river to fight the British. If so had the letter ben red by Howe, the British would have killed Washington and his army or the British might had fled from them. He was successful with his plan. He was trying to surprise Howe.
